Yvette “Yve” Renee Johnson is a collector of life experiences. She is a writer, an artist, a bookworm, and admittedly, a coffee-holic.
Yve’s Journey to Becoming :
At first a Reader, then a Writer
As a child Yve was often described by others as the “weird”, quiet, black girl. Amidst teasing and social rejection, she found refuge in reading books that offered an enticingly foreign world of adventure, love, and a sense of belonging that starkly contrasted with her every day reality. She typically spent every weekend walking miles to the nearest library, filling a large pulley suitcase with dozens of books that she eagerly devoured in lieu of socializing with peers. For Yve, books provided an open highway for a mind otherwise trapped by confusing societal perspectives and emotionally painful circumstances.
When the first short story she ever wrote was laminated and read aloud in class by her second grade teacher, Yve realized she had a gift. When she sat in silence despite the surrounding jeers and whispers of her classmates, amazed that she had won a fifth grade creative writing contest, beating out the ‘smarter’ and more ‘popular’ kids at her school, she knew she was a writer. Not only could her voice ensnare an audience, but her words could be heard even when the rest of her was ignored.
Everything else…
For many years, reading books and writing short stories satisfied her need for ongoing connection until one day, they did not. Then, as a lovelorn young adult, she found that the increasing volume of her internal chaos was quieted when she focused on ways to tell her story without stringing words together. Yve learned that for her, any type of creative expression was a conduit of healing for her oft wounded soul. With this foundational understanding, she began creating abstract & mixed media art with three-dimensional objects, spray paint, and vivid acrylic colors that collaged on canvas, mirrors, and usually whatever she could get her hands on.
Over time, Yve has honed and transformed her methods of self-expression into multiple iterations of creative & professional writing endeavors; art projects, entrepreneurial pursuits, targeted community events and varied civic engagements. Whether its words on a page, art on a canvas, or an encounter at a curated event: when Yve creates, she seeks to exposit her human experience in such a way that others are inspired to view the broken nature of life as a work of art that reflects the purpose, hope, and redemption she has found in Jesus Christ.
Yve is a native of Wilmington, Delaware, and currently resides in Florida.
